Susan is a diabetes nurse educator at Winthrop University Hospital’s Pediatric Diabetes Program. She provides education and support for newly diagnosed in-patients as well as ongoing care for these children and their families in an out-patient setting. She facilitates the Toddler and Pre-School Support Group and, for the past five years, facilitated Teen Event Nights, a unique adolescent program for adolescents. She has several years of experience as an adult diabetes educator in a nationally recognized ADA Education Program, where she was the Education Program Coordinator. She is a frequent speaker at various professional meetings, including the American Diabetes Association’s 58th Scientific Session, the National Kidney Foundation, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators, where she will present again at the 2010 San Antonio, Texas meeting.
Susan makes every effort to “practice what she preaches” using interactive techniques, educational models individualized for each learning situation and always making the patient and family the center of the educational process.
Susan was on the Core Curriculum Workshop faculty for over ten years and was integral in developing the “Self-Management Education” component of this course. She is now an alternate speaker, covering for Patricia Andronica, who is on sabbatical.
